Teacher's take
Published
Do you ever stop to think just how important your child’s teacher is in their life? Teachers play a fundamental role in their pupils’ development, but what do we really know about the daily challenges they face in the classroom and their take on the future of education? A new nationwide survey from Kahoot! asked 1,800 UK teachers to reveal what’s on their minds: the challenges they’re struggling with, the changes they feel are most needed, and their level of optimism about the future.
Key findings include:
• Workload under strain: a quarter of teachers say their workload is overwhelming, and 11 per cent describe it as ‘unsustainable’. Only five per cent say they have more capacity than they’re using.
• Retention risks: a worrying14 per cent of teachers say they are unlikely or very unlikely to still be in the classroom in two years' time.
• Need for support: the top three improvements teachers say would help them reach their full potential are more time for planning, smaller class sizes and more staff, and better work-life balance.
• Barriers to keeping children engaged: the biggest challenge for teachers is short attention spans. One in five teachers say large class sizes and a lack of staff support are holding learners back.
• AI in the classroom: one-third of teachers feel cautiously optimistic about AI in the classroom, and 30 per cent are excited about its potential. But a substantial minority remain hesitant.
• Future of education: When asked what makes them most optimistic about the future, the largest group pointed to the rise of creative new teaching approaches. Other reasons for optimism included children’s natural curiosity and eagerness to learn, the potential of technology and AI to enhance learning and increasing inclusivity, equity and community support in schools.
