Holistic help

Faced with all the pressures of modern society and their impact on children, parents are increasingly seeking support beyond conventional routes. Holistic specialist, mother of four and founder of Quester Therapies, AnneMarie Smellie, explains how holistic treatment can make a real difference to children struggling with anxiety, attention issues, low confidence and more.

With three in four UK parents concerned about their child’s emotional wellbeing (NSPCC research), there is growing demand for compassionate, effective support that meets young children’s immediate needs. Whether it’s separation anxiety, outbursts or struggles with attention, these challenges are often rooted in how a child’s developing brain and body process the world around them.

Holistic therapy treats the whole child – emotionally, physically and neurologically. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, it aims to uncover and address the root causes of behavioural and emotional difficulties.

At Quester Therapies, this means combining science-based assessments with gentle, natural techniques. Services include neuro-developmental movement, auditory retraining, nutritional guidance, hypnotherapy and kinesiology – all tailored to children aged five and up.

By supporting the nervous system, digestive health and emotional resilience in natural ways, families often see improvements in their child’s ability to focus, regulate emotions, and feel more confident in daily life.

Many parents are wary of turning to medication at an early age – and while it may be necessary in some cases, holistic therapy offers a gentle alternative to try first.

By supporting the nervous system, digestive health and emotional resilience in natural ways, families often see improvements in their child’s ability to focus, regulate emotions, and feel more confident in daily life.

This approach can work hand-in-hand with existing educational or clinical support, adding depth and understanding that can ease family stress and reduce pressure on schools.

Spotting the signs your child needs support

In the early years, emotional struggles don’t always present in obvious ways. Signs that a child may need extra help include:

● Frequent tantrums or strong emotional reactions.

● Sensory sensitivities (to noise, light, clothing).

● Difficulty sleeping or winding down.

● Trouble focusing or sitting still.

● Avoidance of change or extreme clinginess.

These behaviours often indicate that a child’s nervous system is under strain, making it difficult for them to regulate emotions, follow instructions or feel safe and calm.

Why early movements matter

One of the most overlooked causes of developmental and emotional difficulties is the presence of retained primitive reflexes – automatic movements babies are born with that should fade as they grow.

When these reflexes persist beyond infancy, they can interfere with everything from posture and balance to attention, learning and coordination. For example, a child who startles easily, fidgets constantly or avoids certain movements, may still be affected by these early reflexes. Holistic specialists like Quester Therapies can introduce specific movement patterns and exercises to help integrate these reflexes. They also offer an app, Addressing Neurodiversity with a four-month programme of exercises that is interactive so parents can get in touch if any difficulties arise.

Holistic therapy doesn’t just benefit the child – it often brings a sense of clarity and empowerment to the whole family.

Whole family benefits

Holistic therapy doesn’t just benefit the child – it often brings a sense of clarity and empowerment to the whole family. Parents are actively involved in the process and supported with practical tools they can use at home.

This focus on education and connection helps parents feel more confident in responding to their child’s needs, while also building stronger bonds through play, movement and shared progress.

At Quester Therapies, children are assessed and supported according to their unique emotional, physical, and developmental profile. Some may only need simple nutritional changes to reduce mood swings or improve sleep. Others may benefit from auditory retraining, which helps the brain better process sounds – essential for calm and concentration.

For children with complex needs, Blueprint Kinesiology combines genetic insight with energy therapy to uncover inherited imbalances that may influence mood, attention or behaviour.
