Even if you’re only popping out for a short time, leaving windows and doors unlocked makes your home a prime target for burglars, and so far, 2025 has seen 222,405 reported burglaries, with incidents peaking in London boroughs Kensington and Chelsea, Leeds and Middlesbrough.
In their recent survey. Homeprotect have identified the mistakes we are making when it comes to home security:
- Left an upstairs window open (12 per cent).
 - Didn’t lock the front or back door (20 per cent),
 - Left a downstairs window open (16 per cent),
 - Accidentally left keys in the lock (12 per cent),
 - Didn’t set the alarm system (11 per cent),

They point out that, with no evidence of entry, victims could be left unable to claim on their contents insurance, potentially resulting in them losing out and having to foot the bill themselves.
