In the swim
Published
Summer is on its way out, but that shouldn’t mean the end of water fun for six months, New research from Total Fitness reveals that 1 in 3 British parents struggle to access swimming lessons for their babies and toddlers, with barriers ranging from time and cost to lack of facilities and confidence. The survey also found that only one in four Year 1–2 children can swim 25m unaided. And it’s not just swimming. According to SportsEngland, less than half of children meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily activity set by the Chief Medical Officer, highlighting the need to build movement habits from the earliest age.

With this in mind, Swim Academy has addressed the barriers to taking your child swimming, especially in the autumn and winter months, and how to fix them!
Time and logistics
Time pressures, travel, childcare and lost work hours in a busy working week are key obstacles.
Quick fixes:
- Arrive ready: wear your swimsuit under your clothes and prep toddlers in their swim nappy.
- Pack a swim kit in advance – Swim Academy provides a checklist for busy parents.
- Buddy up: where possible and carpool.
Finances and equipment:
Cost is another big barrier. Lesson fees, childcare for siblings, kit expectations and cancellation fees – especially when illness strikes – add up quickly.
Quick fixes:
- Baby swimming needs minimal kit: a reusable Happy Nappy saves money over time.
- Swim Academy at Total Fitness offers discounts off Baby Swim – check at your local pool.
- Swim Academy also offers one courtesy lesson swaps per quarter, when the cancellation is 24 hours before the lesson.
Fear of an upset baby:
Babies may naturally fear loud environments, cold water or unfamiliar routines. Upset is normal – but manageable with preparation.
Quick fixes:
- Practise water time with a friend and their child if possible.
- Bring essentials: milk, a dummy, soft towels – babies burn lots of energy swimming.
- Be ready for fussiness – it's part of the adjustment process.
- At Total Fitness, the family pools are heated to 31-33°C to help babies feel comfortable in the water.
Swim Academy offer free child swimming assessments to help every child progress at their own pace. The Baby Swim (0–4 years) and Learn to Swim (4+) programmes build confidence gradually, for both little ones and their parents.
