In & out!

Parents spent three times more time outdoors when they were children than their kids enjoy today, according to a new survey from New One4all Favourites Gift Cards.

It seems that today’s kids are swapping hopscotch for headsets.

The survey reveals that more than half (52 per cent) of children today spend just 1.5 hours outdoors daily, a sharp drop from the 4+ hours their parents enjoyed during their own summer holidays. Many parents are now bringing back old-school classics like rounders and treasure hunts to encourage outdoor play. When it comes to parents’ own favourite outdoor games, hide and seek tops the list, followed closely by climbing trees and team sports including football.

Outdoor and screen-free play has a noticeably positive impact on children, with parents saying they are happier, calmer, and more sociable and confident. Yet 2 in 5 parents say they relax screen-time rules during school holiday breaks. While some see it as a lifeline, many are also mixing in offline fun – favourites include arts and crafts, building with LEGO and learning to cook.
